We did a trip last year and went from DF -> Oaxaca -> Merida -> Playa de Carmen -> Tulum -> Cancun.

Of these, my clear favourites as a food lover, were Oaxaca and Merida. Amazing moles, mezcal and cochinito al pibil.

The narco wars absolutely do happen in tourist places like Tulum and Cancun.

Tourists aren’t targeted, but it happens.

Having said that, no need to expect it as if in a war zone.

Thank you for a wonderful post. I love Mexico, and I’ve been missing it this year. Your post makes me likely to go soon. Mexico gets such a bad rap, and the best parts of Mexico are rarely visited or talked about. I’d enjoy another post about the Pueblos Magicos. The ones I’ve visited have been fantastic.

The best times in Mexico are totally accidental. Like the time we accidently locked our keys in a rented Volkswagen Beetle, and the whole village got involved trying to track down the one guy who knew how to break into cars. Finally found him in a local taverna.
